the one that I am most curious about is the type where the ribbon is under or behind rounded plastic instead of on rolls. Is/was this a standard variation or is it just another fake put-together job? Phillip
I've seen hundreds of that type in the few years I've been collecting them so I'd say they are a very standard type. I'll add some pictures of mine after work today.

Thanks for the information guys.

Eric, you nailed the type I am talking about. I took a few photos and though the side view is pretty bad, it seemd the best I could do given my propensity toward not wanting to do things right and get on my knees to shoot the side.

Anyway, what I find odd it the addition of two more ribbons (see back view) after the piece was constructed. It seems lik they were simply saudered onto the bottom. More odd still, they are labor medal ribbons that I believe are out of place at the end like that.

If anybody has an extra hanging pin - you will notice one is missing from the top - or knows how to find one, I would appreciate a PM on how to get a replacement.

As I said, I do not believe this was from a career military man/woman. But if he/she did win the Order of the October Revolution, they knew the right people.

Now I warned you these were bad (side view) because the camera kept focusing on my thumb instead of the side. But hopefully you get the picture. (Like nobody's ever made that joke here before.)

Thanks,
Phillip

This addition happens frequently.

Yeah, like Paul says those add-ons happen occasionally. They're awards won later in service and instead of remaking the whole bar in order they were almost literally tacked on the bottom. The CSM in your case might be for long service.
As far as focusing the camera check out my example on the previous page; I leaned the bar up against something large almost the same height and that helped trick the camera into focusing on the small edge, not the large area underneath.

What if I just remained lazy and held the ribbon bar with my thumb near the top of the bar so everything would be in focus?:D

My question remains though, it appears that this person would have certainly done his time in the military, even in the GPW, but if he had been awarded the Order of the October Revolution, and has a civilian retirement medal, he must have worked very high up in public service, don't any of you think? Please have a look at the variety of orders and medals on the bar and somebody make educated guesses about who he or she might have been to win the order second only to the OL itself and before the ORB. I mention non-military because I've read were KGB officers in the late 1970s and 80s were given the OOR (shortly after it was introduced) as "prizes" for jobs overseen or managed that went well.

By all means, draw any conclusion you would like from the arrangement. I am still trying to guess if he might have been an aggressive and prolific pig farmer who was mistaken for a marching supporter of the soviet cause when he was just trying to get his beasts to market:chuckle.:thumbsup

Anyway, I'll leave that up to anyone with time for a challange.

Take care all,
Phillip

I don't think anyone is sitting on replacements, so the best thing is to do what the owner would have done, go to the shed and produce a new one from some brass wire :)

As for the bar itself - It contains many civil or political, possibly even scientific related awards, like the October Revolution, the Red Banner of Labor (twice), the Order of Badge of Honour. Guessing wildly, this could have been a doctor, scientist, a higher level member of the party, maybe some kind of politruk - anyone who did not wear uniform on daily basis but rather had this ribbon bar to wear on the suit jacket on sunny days. That is my guess.

I've been trying to figure this out for myself without much success. Can anyone help me out with this lovely ribbon bar please? I can see a Red Star and a few jubilee medals...

Am I right in thinking this picture is upside down?

Cheers.

Yes.

OK, let´s see...
First Row: Lenin, Red Banner, Red Banner of labor, Red star
Second: Order for service to Motherland III class, Combat Service, Lenin´s centenary, Bravery during a fire
Third: Distinguished military service medal, 20 yrs of victory in GPW, Veteran of AF, Medal for strenghening combat cooperation
Fourth: 40, 50, 60, 70 years of Soviet AF
Fifth: 20, 15, 10 years of irreproachable service, East German brotherhood in arms medal.

This ribbon bar may have belogned to a senior officer attached to Warsaw Pact.

Here's something I just saw on eBay. It is what looks like a brass suspension for the ribbon bar which is something I've not seen before.
I know that for a time they used brass medal suspensions. I'd guess that during that time they also made brass ribbon bar suspensions.
