How do you catalogue your collection?

Hi All!

I tried cataloging my collection not too long ago, and my results weren't great. I ended up with a cumbersome series of tables on a Word document. I didn't find excel useful either. Any suggestions? How do you keep track of your collection?

Thanks!

-Alex

I used excel also. It's easy to work with and keeps everything organized.

I used to use excel, but the project grew out of hand and I grew tired of it.

Re: How do you catalog your collection?

Thanks guys for the suggestion. I guess I'll give excel another try.

How exactly do you set up your tables? How do you order and sort item (by date purchased, serial #, name, etc)? Also, how detailed is the information you keep track of?

Thanks again!

Re: How do you catalog your collection?

I use a proessional medal database. It works well for me and only cost $20. I can categorize, add pics, numbers, comments etc etc. I have access to all I medals I have or had at the touch of a button. Pretty cool

Re: How do you catalog your collection?

I use a very long Excel spreadsheet with fields for type, s/n, price paid, date bought, who bought from, if researched, posted to SNDB, weight, comments, etc. It's very long now, but it has become an essential tool to keep track of what I have. I make myself fill it out completely each time I add something to the collection.

Brendan - what medals software are you using?

Are any of these collection-cataloging programs free (for us cheapskate forumeers)?
