Red Banner.
Without abandoning the original query I will say that I found my "image tube" on the shelf this morning as used that to make those (IMHO) excellent images of the ORB above.
It's a sheet of construction paper, light in color, with a little flap (see green circle) cut in it. Into the flap I have the camera mounted on the tripod facing down at the item to be photograped. I put the paperclip (see arrow) back in place after shoving the camera into place. Underneath is a black dinner napkin which today I took the time and trouble to remove most of the cat hair (courtesy of Sparky's Southern co-belligerent).
Then, it's just a matter of using the timer and getting the correct shutter speed.
This method removes most of, or all if I put a cover on the tube, the reflections off the enamel which bother me sometimes. It also makes the lighting more even, instead of coming from one direction.

Thus concludes today's misplaced photography lesson.

Neat idea Eric. Do you simply crop the pictures to get tighter shots of say the serial number or some aspect of the face? And what about your "light source" - overhead room lighting or something else I can't see in the photo?

The camera's not that great, lower mid-level digicam. So I leave the zoom pretty much in one spot and do all cropping in Photoshop™. I do use the 'close up' feature though, that's important.

As far as light goes I prefer indirect natural light. You could see the window directly behind the tube if it weren't for the white bedsheets covering it. Lotsa nice bright sunlight down here in Floriduh, especially in the morning/early afternoon.

Eric,
Thanks, great photo-tip. I always struggle with reflection.

Hello everyone,
Just picked up my first order of the red banner today and was wondering if it looked ok? Sorry for the bad pictures.

Natural light is a good start. Try cropping the pictures to get really tight shots - that's where I started, at least (and not to imply that my pictures are ever good enough for these two...;)).
