Phil, are you confusing patina with verdigris? From my coin collecting days, patina is desirable and a natural process that occurs with precious metals (except pure gold that doesn't tarnish). Verdigris is a grainy "rust" or actual corrosion caused by moisture attacking alloys/impurities in metal.
