Re: Surprise!
This is Lieutenant General (The 3 stars make it a modern 2 star equivalent as you started as a major general with 2 stars on the collar for this model.) All generals until general of the army or marshal rank had the same size chevron and star on the sleeves. It is a model 1940 summer tunic which was good until 1943 when epaulets replaced the collar rank. The black velvet backing and wacky looking tank makes it armor. The fact that the stars are embroidered bullion rather than stamped metal suggests it was made earlier in 1940-41 rather than later in the war. This was supposedly named to a future marshal of tanks but research showed that particular officer was a colonel when the war started and only made lieutenant general after 43. Still, considering purges and when ranks and awards were bestowed, I may still figure out who the former owner was or at least narrow it down. Will add a picture to this post after I put the tabs and buttons back on and dress it up with a couple orders.

Re: Surprise!
Glad your restoration is going well, that's a nice tunic...
My project has hit a dead end...Polish lady had it for two years and did NOTHING! Now back to square one... http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/s...ct-before.html |

Re: Surprise!
Sorry to hear. I couldn't find anyone in San Antonio to take on reweaving the mothy Meretskov parade uniform. Where are all those invisible re-weavers now that you need them? Of course you could send it to me and I'll make a nice shadow box highlighting the collars and cuff spools. I'll even post a picture on the soviet awards site so you can see how it looks:)

Re: Surprise!
I understand its very tough to repair moth damage, but why did she need to keep it for two years and THEN tell me should could not do it!
I have not given up (yet)....if I do, i'll then consider your drastic solution : ) I have another old lady to try (Greek) in December...maybe she can work a miracle! |

Re: Surprise!
Jeff, Doug,
If dealing with Russia does not overly scare you, get in touch with me, I know a couple of people here in StP who could do the job. Marc |

Re: Surprise!
Marc,
Thank you for your offer. No, dealing with Russia does not bother me, at least with stuff coming out...though sending something back across the line is not something I am wild about doing. The Russians I deal with have offered as well; I am sure the people over there could tackle this job better than here in the US (though I was hoping to find an immigrant Russian Tailor in the NYC area)...if I strike out with the Greek lady, then back to Russia it goes! Re: Surprise!
All back together again. (PS: sewing collar tabs on in the back seat of a toyota will make you carsick). Squint a bit and you don't notice the mold stains quite as badly.

Re: Surprise!
Heck of a job.:thumbsup No squinting necessary when you've seen the original condition and how far it's come. Looking at the moldy version made me squint in pain.;)
