I'll bet
on the 13418 to win.
Nice collection. I like stars and have been forced to collect a number (only 40, though) of them to fill all those holes in my soviet cloth. |

I have seen recently an 21XXXXX Red Star with the "1" changed to "4". Unfortunatelly, I was not allowed to photograph it, but it was a clear cut fake.

I personally think that eBay is an indicator, but no more. Just as happens in real-world auctions, when 2 people decide to go all out on a specific item (see recent NY auction), you end-up with aberrations that do not reflect the actual reality of the market.

Then what does, Marc? Isn't the "value" simply what someone is willing to pay for something (above and beyond the limited intrinsic value)? |

I agree that value is simply what someone is willing to pay for something, but there happens to be aberrations. If tomorrow my "standard" post-war, long-service ORS sells for $500 because 2 specific individuals decided that they had to have it, does that mean that all "standard" post-war, long-service ORS are now worth $500? I don't think so. It just happens that mine sold for an abnormal amount, that's all. Marc |

True. In your hypothetical case, maybe they're just fools. And maybe someone (or some two) needed your hypothetical Red Star for group reunification. But if similar results appear were to in several sales, maybe the emerging pattern would tell us something? (Never mind that it would be something depressingly lunatic.)
Evaluating real-world auction results is a complex art, but they do tend to be better guides to the market than prices invented by dealers (naming no names). I'm not saying that such results would tell us something, I'm not saying they wouldn't, I'm just saying they might. |

Having worked for a big auction house, I definitely agree 100% with you on that point! Marc |

Marc,
I agree, often huge prices on eBay are a result of two or more egoes clashing, but some dealers would raise their prices accordingly - seen it many times. Alexei |
