Strange black sand in my medal`s depressions...
Hi,
looking at some of my campaign medals under magnification, I realised some sort of green paste OR very fine, glittering black sand in the depressions of the letters on the obverse and reverse - are these cast fakes with a rest of the casting mould sand on it ? Jens* |

Jens,
It could be, or it could be dirt. Can you post a good scan of an example. Marc |

Hi Marc,
I used a microscope, so it will be impossible to make any photographs. I know this type of sand very well, because my grandfather was a moulder in a steel work and he used the same material to cast small and very detailed items. This sand is glittering and black in colour like grinded hard coal. Jens* |

Jens,
Then it seems that you know the answer to your own question... Marc |

I just wanted to know, if anybody else has observed similar characteristics on one of his/ her medals. I`m new in this forum, so I don`t know yet... Jens* |

I wasn't sure where to move this thread, so it's here now.
