Was it common for partisans to have code names to use in lieu of their own real names?

Most of the partisans I have heard of (Polish and Soviet, I mean) had some pseudonyms. Sometimes unusual and someimes being just the guy's first name.

My friend's dad's name was "short red bush" ???

I'm still trying to figure out my dad's two names.

1. The weather in Moscow is pleasant and warm.
2. Rosebud
3. The popcorn is popping.
4. The Aussie has landed.
5. The Pavlo has landed.
