The Nazi influence on DDR uniforms is impressing...

Yes, the open necked tunics are similar to Waffen SS officers parade tunics. The cap device is reasonably similar to the wartime Luftwaffe officer caps. West German Bundeswehr uniforms were quite similar to the wartime German uniforms too.

I remember reading a history of the NVA (National People's Army), and it mentioned that the East Germans introduced Soviet-style uniforms for their militias and border guards. Because of negative reaction from the public, they abandoned it for uniforms more reminiscent of the Wehrmacht. Pretty funny for a government that claimed a complete break from the history and responsibilty of the previous Nazi regime.
Some of this is reflected in West Germany, too. For a while, their firefighters still wore the WW2 era Stahlhelm (steel helmet). German military uniform and tradition have influenced many armies, the Soviet Army among them. The wreaths on the Soviet enlisted dress cap badge and the air force/airborne forces badge have the same basic leaf arrangement as the basic German officer/NCO badge. And of course, there is the Stechschritt (goosestep) ... |

Bone Collector:
You´re right. The assasin down here looked worse, as you said:D The chilean army was founded by german military and instructors. In parades, conscripts, officers and junior officers still use the typical german helmets. However, the navy and air force have adopted a more "USA" style. The army is as german as always, but watching more closely, there is some notorious difference. But I can´t see it so superficially. Esteban

A historical footnote:
Today is the 40th anniversary of the flight of the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, now 66 years old. May long life, health, and prosperity be hers! "VYECHNAYA SLAVA SOVIETSKAM COSMONAVTAM!!" |

William, I trust you, I didn't see the very little grains on the pic on my screen. It is true they normally receive the complete hero set instead of hero work...

Charlet,
Hero of Bulgaria is very rare award with only 58 recepients. They didn't just give Hero NRB to any foreeign citizens, Bulgarians were more strict in awarding Hero NRB than Soviets were. William |
