Re: The History Of Suspension?
Comrades,
Back on (toward) topic, there is the question as to when (and why) Tsarist Russian adopted what we think of as the peculiar Soviet/Russian style of medal suspension. I know this is a Tsarist question, something which (happily) this forum does not focus upon, but I think it is relevant here. Clearly, before the Great War this style had been adopted. When? By what process of evolution? Curious minds really want to know. Two bits of eye candy: The first lives with me (and has been posted elsewhere on the forum), the second does not, as the admission ticket was FAR too rich for my blood (as the recipient most probably served on the Князь Потёмкин Таврический). (Though, clearly, the suspension on the second is "diddled".) Last edited by medals73; 01-08-2012 at 08:02 PM. |

Re: The History Of Suspension?
Does anyone have Dimitri Romanov's book on Imperial Russian awards? It was for some unknown reason published in English in a country that has absolutely no historical ties with Russia.... Danmark!
I do have a 2008 (I think) book on the subject of Imperial Russian awards but it is currently many thousands of miles from me although it won't be in a week.

Re: The History Of Suspension?
Here is Frederik VI King of Danmark 1808-1839 clearly wearing a an Order with the ribbon deliberately folded into a 5 sided shape. This portrait is probably from nearer to the start of his reign.
The ribbon is also folded in a fashion that you can soon "stack" the awards in a similar fashion to the 1943 ribbons, with the award of the highest precedence displaying the most ribbon.
