Gorbachev & Martin Luther King

This is maybe one of the lesser known awardings of a foriegn Medal to Soviets.
It is the Medal of the prizewinner for the nonviolent actions for peace, named after Martin Luther King. USA. 1990. Bronze, dia 70 mm. President of the USSR M. S. Gorbachev was awarded with it during his visit to the USA in June 1990.

DIMITRIJENKO PAVEL IGNATJEVIC Air Force 21.June 1945

Great Info!

Kim,

The total number of awards to foreigners (22) tracks with the information I posted in a separate thread. No surprise that the lion's share (16/22 or 73%) went to Soviets. BTW, A. N. Vitruk's rank was Maj Gen (Aviation).

Regards,

Hi guys,
There is a mistake in the "Hero of Mongolia to Soviets" listing:

Tereshkova, Valentina Vladimirovna did not receive the Hero title but the Hero of Labour title.

Apparantly Tsedenbal did not want to give her the Hero title because no (living) Mongolian woman was honoured with the title at that point.
So she got the Hero of Labour title.

Interesting that he is wearing his awards in the earlier pattern, given that the year is 1977 and he is in service.

I don't know why, but it kinda strikes me as weird that this is the one East German award the Lt. Colonel has... given his position, I would have expected a more "military" award.

Noticed in a couple of the photos in Pickard's book that this medal was available with (or at least modified to have) a five sided ribbon hangar to make it fit in more readily with other military awards. I only saw this on German uniforms, though.

From what I've seen, mostly Soviet general officers received the higher DDR awards we're accustomed to seeing.

This is low enough a fellow DDR officer could have awarded it to him without much, if any fanfare as a friendly gesture.

Here are some examples of adapted Medals:

Ehrentitel Aktivist der sozialistischen Arbeit (Activist of Socialist Labour) (1969)

Ehrentitel Aktivist der Siebenjahrplanes (Activist of Seven Year Plan) (1960-69)

Ehrentitel Aktivist der Fünfjahrplanes (Activist of Five Year Plan) (1953-69)

And the normal pentagonal suspension for the Medaille für Treue Dienste, Nationalen Volksarmee (1956) Five years service.

NVA personal were allowed to adapt their Civilian awards to be worn on the NVA ribbon bar albeit at there own cost. They were not supplied for them.
