Russia gives awards to Uzbek veterans of Afghanistan...
This is cool - a ceremony in Tashkent at the Russian Embassy giving out ORSs, BMs, and CSMs for Afghan service in Soviet days:
Link to story Knowing Tashkent, some of them will be for sale within a year. Sad, but true... |

Fascinating:
Russia gives Soviet awards (not their awards) to soldiers from Uzbekistan (a foreign country) for service in a third country. Would love to see the diplomatic traffic on this one! |

The Russians have done this before in Uzbekistan and elsewhere to show that they're back in the game.

Thats very cool, I guess it lets the former republics know that Russia is still around.

Oh, believe me, they don't need to hand out a few BMs to show the former republics they are still there. They have many methods, learned decades ago. Live for a while in one of those former republics, and you'll understand... Hell, just watch the news.

What do you mean?
Is Russian influence really that strong? I could see in Ukraine and Belarus maybe but what about in places like Latvia and Estonia? |

Excluding the Baltics... They are a very different set of animals - they are quite lucky to really be far removed now after so many unhappy years.
To rephrase, any former republic that has any energy resources or strategic location (e.g., an important buffer/border or possible pipeline transit route), and doesn't fall under the warm and comforting blanket of NATO or the EU. As for Ukraine and Belarus, don't forget that there were 15 of these dudes, so you've left out the ones "not Russia" that have oil, gas, or many of those strategic borders. There's a lot more to the old Soviet Union than the Greater Russians... |

Ah I see.
Well, I know that theres more than Russia and Ukraine ect, I guess they havent gotten much luck lately, considering the war in Georgia. But to be honest I am not sure where to stand on that whole political thing... I think its nice of Russia to give out awards. :D |

Re: Russia gives awards to Uzbek veterans of Afghanistan...
My question is, did have they awarded currently produced awards or mint stocks(recovered from deceased military from the USSR times)?

Thats a great question!
