This catalog (text in German and English) is outdated and the prices are inacurate, but - there is a section on republican orders from the 1920's and variations. The book is from 1995.

The new Herefurth catalog
What's the latest publication of the 'Herefurth' catalog? Is it any good as a medal reference? Has the author published any other books, perhaps in English?
Kind Regards, Shane Cook. |

Wait for the answer from Vienna.......;)
I don't use it as a reference. I use the Mcdaniel, Shiskov, merlay, Kutsenko books - to name a few. Tal |

Shane,
Christian is the man who personally knows Herefurth, I'm sure he will respond, if you need an answer right away, try emailing him. Art

Herfurth
Sorry,
I just arrived from Yugoslavia. News about Tito's award collection will be published soon - I hope. Herfurth is of course no reference book, but a small and nice booklet for carrying around. This booklet is widely spread in eastern Europe (and Baku). The 3rd and latest editon of Herfurth's catalogue (german & english) is from 1999 and includes also - the very beautiful und soviet manufactured - awards of the Mongol People's Republic. His major book has been only published in german: "Militärische Auszeichnungen der UdSSR", 1987, Berlin, Militärverlag der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik (GDR). Dr. Herfurth published a lot of phaleristic papers about SU-awards in east-german military magazines (only german). Please contact Dr. Dietrich Herfurth, he knows about Art's forum, but has no internet: + 49 30 44 200 26 (also FAX). Regards from Vienna |

I received a copy of the most recent Herefurth catalogue today and I was pleasantly surprised. The third edition lists orders, medals and interesting enough, early badges. As I'm just starting to collect early badges, it's quite enlightening.
The price guide is also quite interesting, although how accurate it is, is questionable. The English provided seems to simply be the books introduction, plus a single line explaining what each award is. To make the most of the book, you really need to be able to read German. However, it's still a useful reference book if you don't already have it, and I'm glad I bought it. It's a shame we don't seem to have any German members of the forum who could comment on the book, or how popular collecting soviet medals is in Germany. I've just been working out some prices, compared with what is listed as the EURO price in the catalogue to the actual price available to people buying from the internet, and the prices I have paid over the past year or so. As far as I can tell the actual price, in US dollars, is around two thirds the Euro price shown. Kind Regards, Shane Cook. Last edited by CtahhR; 02-20-2014 at 11:29 AM. |
