I have two naval uniform posters with this person. one is in english, made by the us defence inteligence angency (My bad, i never noticed this: dated april 1986) the other is in russian, made by Moscow Military Publishers, dated 1989. The Russian poster led me to believe that it would be in the 1988 manual. I posted this thread because I didn't know why the black boards were on the white uniform and to see if any more details were in the manual.

So it probably isnt in the 1988 manual,

Update: This is a No.2 Summer Parade Uniform of Warrant officer. This finding is result of very difficult translation. Esteban, would you happen to have a picture from the manual for the warrant officer if there is one? I assume that black boards on white tunic is the warrant officer equivalent of parade boards.

ps: NO.2 summer parade uniform for an officer is the guy on right of picture

There is one, but only in black summer uniform. If you want it, give me some time to take a decent shot of it.

Something doesn't seem to add up here. I finally have the 1988 reg book, and it shows a warrant officer in the black summer uniform, with black boards. The white uniform also has black boards. However, both also wear the gold cap cord. I forgot when these were introduced (a reminder may help), but this may indicate that the White boards for warrant officer, introduced with the 1974 uniform reg revisions (I think) were phased out later. Now that I have made some logic out of this anomaly, I need to confirm my conclusion, and get dates for each change.

For Warrant Officers, when were the white boards for the white tunic phased out and replaced with the black ones? When did warrant officers start wearing a gold officer's cap cord? Logically, both of these would have occured in the 1988 regs, but I want to get an answer from the experts.

If possible, and if anyone has a 1974 (or the mysterious 1980) reg book, does it show a warrant officer wearing white boards? (preferably for parade uniform, but service is fine) If so, can you post it?

My theory that the whit boards were phased out is now moot. I looked in he back of my 1989 regs and found a picture of a white shoulder board with 3 stars (chief warrant officer) and its says: к тужурке белого цвета, and babelfish says it means: to the double-breasted jacket of the white color. It can't be that inaccurate, so it must mean it was still authorized in the final 1989 regulations. But could the original picture, from a Soviet poster be correct to the regs? Or is it just an error which indicates the military printer's blatant disregard for accuracy? If it is a mistake, the American posters have this error but also some others, such as the fact that naval aviators wear a light blue cap band, so they can be excused. Your probable adversary is not likely to inform you that you are representing their uniforms inaccurately when you are on the brink of war with them. But if this is an error, why does Russian poster have it? Do they just not care?

Please disregard previous questions... Apparently pictures aren't worth a thousand words, the text is, and possibly more. The white boards are worn on the white tunic for service, while the black boards are worn on the white tunic for parade (and walking out). Black boards are used on the black tunic at all times for warrant officers.

"Case closed..."

New question: The show two types of service uniforms, in system, and out of system... System may be a bad translation, but it is in something and out of something. What is the difference? I know for in system, you can only wear a white shirt with the white double breasted tunic, and for winter, a stand collar blue tunic is worn, whereas in out of system, you can wear a white or cream shirt with the whit tunic and the black double breasted tunic which takes the place of the blue stand collar tunic. What gives?

Maybe you mean "in formation" and "out of formation"?

Ahh yes, thats it. Babelfish isn't exactly good for translating advanced Russian grammar and vocabulary. What exactly is the difference between in formation and out of formation?
