Fake Order And Medal Booklets
Is it because all of the entries look like they were made at the same time or because there are time line anomalies based on the awards and their serial numbers (or perhaps something I am missing all together)?

Phillip

Phillip,

in my oppinion there are a few reasons.
- Stamps are a little bit blurry
- black ink is not so widespread
- ink colour of the name and the other entries are not the same

I think this is not a total giveaway but that are bad signs.

best regards
Andreas

Andreas, I see what you mean. It looks like the rubber on the stamps was not carved very well (smudges) and the serial numbers look like they were entered with a felt-tip pen - certainly not a hard point fountain pen like one would expect from this time period.

I'm so focused on the style of writing that I often forget about the India ink and the type of pen used.

Thanks,
Phillip

Hi Andreas, definitely a :thumbsdown

One thing about Soviet-ear documents is also a certain handwriting style. Now, there was plenty of sloppy handwriting but also there's a permissible range of shapes and slants that's to be expected for a 1940s document.. This could be an interesting study unto itself, probably already done somewhere... The handwriting, specifically in the date, (and how the ink permeated the paper) looks like a modern job. :thumbsdown

Here's a horribly fake Hero booklet I owned for about 5 minutes before returning it for a refund. :thumbsdown There's no excuse for mine even buying it--I'll claim I was away from the computer, away from my Red Bible, and bidding on an auction on my phone. Anyway, behold this beauty. :)
1. For how obvious this fake is, someone actually took some effort to make it look real. The photo looks a little like the fighter ace Valentin Figichev. The citation and award dates are correct per the "Heroes of the SU" reference.
2. The handwriting is missing the careful style of most of these. The curve of the letters also shows that it's a crass, modern job. The Kalinin signature looks bad.
3. Incidentally, the handwriting is exactly the same as seen on another fake document, one ph3s was selling with full disclosure here: FS-Best $: a copy of HSU - The Soviet Military Awards Page Forum
4. The seal of the USSR has too many republics for 1944. :laff

These pages were glued together. A "Goznak 1947" footnote on what's supposed to be a 1944 doc. :o

And the sad thing is, the seller probably sold it to somebody else!
Consider yourself lucky. Be careful out there!

Also the "forced" staining.

Very true Paul. That was the first thought I had actually: "if there are water stains on the booklet, why isn't the 'fountain pen' ink smudged?" Amateur job for sure. :)

This is another strange document I cam across today. I know handwritten "field" documents exist, but is this one of them?

Thanks Marc. For the price I guess it is worth adding to my collection of "unusual" (meaning not just an ordinary award booklet) campaign medal docs.:)

Hi, I need you again :)
Could you give an evaluation of this booklet,
with an interesting assignment of a Order for Personal Courage.
What do you think?

Thanks in advance
Marse
