Red Star.
Rarer than I thought it seems?

SOVSUBS,
Let people know that you are looking for ORS to Submariners like I've done with awards to medics. It does get tough when you narrow the field. But, WELL WORTH IT:thumbsup :thumbsup

Why don't you widen the search? Does anyone have anything award-related to submariners? I've only seen two sets of Odessa and Sevastopol medal docs, each set of two documents awarded to a different person. That's it.

Paul's right. Focus on ALL related awards. I have started to collect any order or medal & documents to all medical personnel. Hang in there, let people know what your focus is and see what happens.

Yes, submariner awards are rare it seems but thats my interest. I have seen award docs for the Odessa and Sevastapol medals awarde to the same man in 1943 but expensive of course. There must be awards out there somewhere

Yes, they exist, but will you ever see one?

For example, one of the things I collect is Soviet WWII special operations awards. In almost twenty years of looking for one unit in particular, OMSBON, I've seen items only twice. The first time the researched piece sold almost automatically (with a big premium) and in the second instance only the soldier's ID booklet mentions the individual's service and none of the awards are from that period. The premium is justifiably still there too so I'm still mulling it over.

The Soviet navy was the smallest branch of service. Submariners are even a smaller subset of the navy. If you further constrain yourself to a researched Red Star you may find one, but it could be a long time looking and it will probably cost you. Again, I'll recommend you throw your net a little wider, but then again, isn't most of collecting in the pursuit?

I've never seen a Red Star to a submariner, but I have owned a Nakhimov medal to a submariner, and a group to a man who had at one time been a commissar on a submarine early on during the war. I know of a Military Medal group to a Cold War submariner, but those are the only researched submarine awards I've ever seen. I'm sure that groups exist out there, but you might have to go through piles of Red Stars (and trust me, I've researched piles of Red Stars) before you find a single one to a submariner.

But as desantnik says, the excitement of collecting is in the pursuit!

Thanks for the invaluable help and suggestions, all "taken on board" as they say....the thrill of the chase is part of the fun for me, there must be medals and awards out there somewhere, I have seen awards for the Odessa and Sevastapol which are expensive in my view but they are rare and I may have to make further enquiries in that direction. Thanks again :thumbsup

I know some information has been stated but point me toward something about this range of stars and the reason they most were issued on 3.11.44.

Honestly, I am ordering my "Echos of War" book but in the meantime, help me out.

Hello,
If I understand correctly your question, I would say that this is because the was a massive awarding decree on that date and everybody who were eligible for the 15 years of irreproachable service got it on that date. There were few other massive awarding dates like this (I remember 1951 and 1956 among other).

If you check Echoes of War when you receive it, you will see the same dates for other long service awards as well... combat service medal (10 years), red stars (15 years), red banner (20 years), lenin (25 years) and red banner again (25 years).

During those years, people were not getting long service awards at the exact date of their 10,15,20 or so years of service but generally on such massive awarding dates... one single decree for everybody.
