Thanks Eryk:thumbsup, I guess that strengthens the Cossack part of the divisional title.

I believe what you have is correct. The two question marks stand for "Волновахская Донская" (Volnovakhsk, Don).

Here is something that I have wondered about for a while.
In the anglicized naming of units the term independent is often used. However, I have also seen detached, separate, and unattached used. My question is can these terms be used interchangeably, whether their use is just due to the translator's preference or whether they have specific meanings? Simon

UQWozza Wrote:Here is something that I have wondered about for a while. I assume you are referring to the word "otdel'nii". The detached, separate, and unattached could all be synonyms for this word, however the best fit for this word in English military professional use is "independent". An "independent" unit can be detached, unattached, separate, or attached to other units. A usual military organization has permanently assigned, ennumerated subordinate parts, i.e. a Soviet rifle division had usually three rifle regiments, an artillery regiment, and other, smaller assigned units. "Independent" units were created for various reasons such as to task organize as required, had a special purpose, different composition than other, similarly signed units, etc.

I have always used independent and will now continue to do so. Simon

Looking for any info on the Cold War (1970's - 1980's) activities/service of the 153rd Rifle Regt. Trying to figure out if the unit was deployed outside of the USSR.

Hi guys,
I've tried researching this, but not too many results. I suspect I am not looking in the right place myself. I am trying to find out where the 877 Rifle Regiment (Strelkovij Polk) of the 282 Rifle Division was fighting on June 28, 1943. I got research back for a Bravery Medal # 727,405--Samarin Sergey Ilyich was an EM, Automatic Rifle Company rifleman. The citation doesn't state a location, just that Sergey rushed into an enemy trench, threw two grenades and destroyed two German machine guns/gunners as well as repelled enemy counterattacks. The date of the battle coincides with his wound date as well. The citation is signed by commander of the 282 Rifle Division, Belborodov.. Really welcome any help! George
