Damaged, Repair, Clean, Preserve Soviet Awards And Documents.
Hi Gentlemen,

Has any of you already received a piece that was probably not packed the best possible way and therefore had an "accident" during the trip to your home and arrived with a broken screw?

Well, after so many pieces received from here and there it finally happened to me Sad

What I'd like to know is if any of you to whom that kind of thing might have happened has some wise advise about what to do.
Is it possible to repair? How? By whom?

As the piece in question is (apparently) in silver, I went today to three different jewllers, but all three told me they wouldn't risk soldering it because their methods of soldering silver with silver would involve very high temperatures and that would most probably destroy or at least seriously damage the enamel on the obverse.
I say apparently in silver because this is a Mongolian piece and even thought it's considered to be made in Mongolian silver, the jewllers I showed the piece to, as they couldn't see the Portuguese hallmarks (obviously) were not sure if it's silver or not. I already noticed this some time ago when I also showed a Soviet silver piece to a jewller who wasn't sure it was silver. It seems to me they have this tendency to consider the local silver the only one they recognise as such and for them the best silver around, but well...

Anyway, what would you recommend? Do you think it would be possible to resolder the screw with for example tin (also called jewller's putty?) ? I believe it wouldn't be necessary to submit the piece to such high temperatures as if resoldering it with silver, am I right?

Well, if any of you have already had the same problem I'd love to read your advices on what should or could be done in such case.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Dolf
