This listing is for the lot of 3 very descriptive letters pertaining to soldier Seth Hale and his hospital care while suffering from acute dysentery, the biggest casualty produced of the civil war.

Letter #1 - 4 pages. U. S. General Hospital, Portsmouth Va, Sept 24 & 14, 1864 from sister of Seth Hale to family at home. She is at hospital helping care for brother critically ill with dysentery. He has been there for two months are she's caring for him for the past five weeks. Tells of his poor condition, bedridden, etc. treatment with opium, eager appetite, etc. and describes the hospital conditions saying "... he has a nice hair mattress and hair pillows and linen sheets. We have things more comfortable here than at home, if it was only quiet..." - much, much detail on her loving care of brother and his slow, belabored progress. in closing she writes thq he will be moved into a room '...where we can have a fire for he gets so chilled...,' '...do not be alarmed at any time to hear that Seth is not living..."

Letter #2 - 2pages, Sep 16, 1864
Further report on soldier Seth Hale to family from his sister who is there caring for him. Seems to be improving "...He told me he felt better than any other time before since he had been in the hospital. ...Isn't that encouraging!... he is off taking those opium powder and is not half so fretful and impatient...' She says she spends the night caring for him but has more free time now that the weather has cooled "...not having to fan him or keep the flies off..."

Letter #3 2pages
Continuing report on health of brother Seth. His good nurse has left us..." and the new one "...does well and is faithful but slow..." She explains that the nurses are on duty only during daytime hours and that's why she spends nights with him "...at night they have regular night watchers and they are not as faithful as I could wish ... with good care in the daytime, a patient willhave it all undone with poor care at night..." - Seth's progress is very slow, but he is improiving to the point she feels she may be able to return home after two months there "...it will be a long time before he will be able to come North... his vitality is all gone and wil never be what he once was ... he will never do any fighting for uncle sam...

Very good content about hospital operation and patient care, and of course, Seth Hale of Worcester Co. Maine.
