This is a 55th Infantry Regiment embroidered patch showing the regiment\'s shield, split white and black, with a broken bridge between two towers.
The 55th was constituted in the Regular Army on 15 May 1917 and organized that June at Chickamauga Park, Georgia, with men from the 17th Infantry. Assigned to the 7th Division, it fought in Lorraine in 1918 and first entered the line near Pont-a-Mousson. The white and black field comes from the arms of Metz, the broken bridge from Pont-a-Mousson, and the corner block honors the 17th Infantry. The regimental motto is Honor, Valor.
It measures 2.75 by 3.5 inches with a cut edge and sew-on backing.
Frame it in a shadow box with a relative\'s service papers, or give it to a family with a 55th Infantry soldier in its history.
