1851 Pattern Officer’s Sword Belt Eagle Plate
- . This pattern can be seen in American Military Belt Plates by O’Donnell & Campbell on page 395 (Plate 655).
- This plate is a wartime copy, (from 1851) most likely made locally in small quantity, and being a sand casting, lacks the usual sharpness seen in mass produced, and professionally made examples. These were made during war time for “the PEOPLE”, but in very small quantities …
- The federal shield did not cast nicely; the lettering in the riband lacks a sharp impression. The buckle obviously was copied exactly like the original pattern with the applied wide tongue, but was modified by the owner to fit an existing keeper and shows crudely cut sides. There are no sharp edges on the cuts, and are smooth to the touch from good honest wear.
