The Franco-Prussian War Medal 1870–1871 (Kriegsdenkmünze für die Feldzüge 1870–1871) was instituted on May 20, 1871, by Kaiser Wilhelm I to honor soldiers and combatants who participated in the Franco-Prussian War, a pivotal conflict that led to the unification of Germany and the creation of the German Empire. Combatant versions of the medal were struck from bronze reclaimed from captured French cannon barrels, a detail often commemorated along the outer edge inscription ("AUS EROBERTEM GESCHUETZ"). The obverse features an Iron Cross surrounded by a laurel wreath with the campaign years "1870 1871" at its center, while the reverse displays the royal monogram of King Wilhelm I topped by the Prussian crown above the inscription "Dem siegreichen Heere" ("To the victorious army"), surrounded by the motto "Gott war mit uns, Ihm sei die Ehre" ("God was with us, to Him be the glory").
