Antique Civil War Identified Confederate Roller Buckle Belt & Knife
Great Example of a Smith & Cleghorn style roller buckle belt maker.
Smith & Cleghorn, Macon, GA
Smith & Cleghorn are listed in Albaugh & Simmons' Book directory of “Confederate Arms” as makers of artillery harnesses, cavalry saddles, leggings, sword belts, and knapsacks. According to Macon, Georgia courthouse records, the firm was in business from 1859-1865.
Google “Smith & Cleghorn” to see an example of the belt
The belt & knife/sheath show appropriate wear as being together for a 150+ years.
Knife fits the sheath like a glove
Belt is still supple but I am very careful with it because I still consider it fragile due to the wear & age
Beautiful Ornate Brass Pommel & Hilt. They have little engraved slashes going around the brass if you look close at the pictures
The hilt has a small wiggle to it only if you try to move it
This had markings on top of the sheath that are VERY DIFFICULT to Read. When I purchased this from an estate years ago they had information saying it said “9th GA” or “GA 9th” & possibly an “I” or “C” for infantry or Calvary. I can’t remember the exact words but it was at least GA + Regiment #. if I find the information I will update it but regardless, it’s difficult to read. Being Sold as is.

The belt is Fragile so I will pack this item with plenty of room. I will not just roll it up. I will make it one full circle Like shown in the first picture. That’s why the $25 shipping charge. I refuse to be the one that damages the item. If it cost less to ship it, I’ll refund the difference.
