Stalag X-B was a WWII German POW camp located near Sanbostel in Lower Saxony in north-western Germany. Between 1939-1945 several hundred thousands of POW\'s of 55 nations passed through the camp. Due to the bad conditions in which they were housed, thousands died of hunger, disease, or were killed by the guards. Estimates of the dead number from 8,000 to 50,000. The camp was built by Polish POW\'s. After the victory over France the POW population increased dramatically. American and British prisoners received better treatment according to the Geneva Convention Accords meaning they received Red Cross packages. French and Belgians were treated according to the accords but had to rely on outside help for food. Serbian, Polish and Italian (after 1943) POWs received less amenities. Soviet prisoners were treated harshly. On 29 April the camp was liberated by the British XXX Corps. The camp also held civilian prisoners and was considered a Concentration Camp.
