General Henry Larcum Abbott was a notable US Army military engineer. Before the Civil War Abbott pioneered the scientific study of the Mississippi River flow. In 1861 Abbott was wounded in action at the First Battle of Manassas, Virginia, served during the War as a topographical engineer, and as Chief of Artillery at the Siege of Petersburg and at Fort Fisher, North Carolina. Postwar Abbott rose to the rank of Brigadier General, US Regular Army and was influential in developing the US Coastal Defense system. The OR Atlas of the war of the rebellion shows some of Abbott's line drawings of large caliber Confederate artillery shells he made at Petersburg. An Original 1863 Copy Letter to Captain Abbott from Major General NP Banks thanking him for his service on Banks staff with best wishes for his promotion, (signed) Very truly yours, N.P. Banks, New Orleans, Feb 4th 1863". This Original 1863 copy letter came with some of General Abbott's papers from his estate.
