$76.01

Civil War soldier's letter, 3-1/2 pgs., approx. 5" x 8", dated at Woodville, Alabama, May 21, 1864, from Joseph E. Hutton, Co. A, 80th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, to his sister.
The writer of this letter was mustered into Co. A, 80th Ohio Infantry on Nov. 6, 1861, he was taken prisoner at the 2nd Battle of Corinth, Miss. on Oct. 4, 1862, and returned to his regiment on April 10, 1863. Promoted to Corporal on Nov. 6, 1864. Mustered out at Little Rock, Ark. on Aug. 13, 1865.
Great content, written shortly after his return to his regiment after being on furlough at home (the furlough was granted to all the men who re-enlisted, and the Regiment became the Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry - O.V.V.I.). He writes of leaving home and on arrival at Columbus, Ohio to join the Regiment, found that they had left for the front shortly before, but by the next day, there were 100 more men of his Regiment gathered who had missed going, and they started in pursuit of the rest of the Regt. by train, which took 7 days, and for 200 miles they had to ride on the roofs of freight cars! He writes of the area being mostly cleared of Rebs, but that there are Guerillas in the mountains who come down occasionally to tear up a portion of the Railroad. More good content.

"Dear Sister,
I seat myself once more in Camp to write you a few lines, to inform you that I am well and have again joined my Regiment in the field. I left home on Monday the 9th Oct. to join my Regt. at Columbus, but on arriving there I found that they had left for the front but a few hours previous to my reporting. I staid there till the next evening, by which time they had nearly one hundred of the Regiment gathered in, all being one day behind time, and we all started in pursuit. Leaving Columbus late in the evening on a train of box cars for Cincinnati, where we arrived the next morning in the midst of a snow storm, which made it very disagreeable traveling. We left there the same day and were pushed on with all possible speed, not stopping any place only long enough to change cars. After crossing the Ohio River, we had fair weather and we all enjoyed the trip first rate. We travelled all by Rail Road, which was very tiresome, being on the way better than seven days and nights with but little sleep and having to ride about two hundred miles on the roofs of freight cars. On the morning of the 16th we arrived at Larkinsville, Ala., where we found the Regiment in Camp, they having got there three days previous to us. We reported to the Colonel and was welcomed back and not a word said to us about being behind. We left that placed on the 18th and marched to this town, which is called Woodville, and is situated on the Memphis & Charleston R.R., fifteen miles east of Huntsville, where we was camped at the time we started home on furlough.
Our Regiment is all scattered along the Rail Road, doing Guard Duty. There is but two Companies of us at this place, but the country around here is about clear of Rebs, so that we feel perfectly safe. There is a few Guerillas a scouting around in the mountains that come down occasionally to tear up a little of the Rail Road for us, but don't amount to much. The weather has got pretty warm here; already vegetables of nearly all kinds are big enough for eating, farmers are working their corn all around us. We have fixed up our summer quarters and are very comfortably situated. I hope we may spend the hot part of season here, as we have good spring water close to our quarters and plenty to eat, and not much to do in the way of duty....
