Item Description
Civil Version Commander-Class Hungarian Merit MedalMaterial: zinc alloy with green water ripple ribbon Proper hanging loop, not paper clip Imitation enamel 1921 Version Historical Reasons: This medal was established in 1922, but many rare versions on the market are marked 1921, mainly for two reasons:
- As early as 1920, the senior Hungarian military authorities discussed new medal plans, including reviving old medals (such as the 1848-1849 Hungarian Military Merit Medal), but finally chose a brand-new design. The prototype production started in 1921, led by designer Megyer-Meyer Antal, integrating national symbols (such as red, white and green tricolor).
- Production delay and prototype marking: The official charter was approved on June 19, 1923, but due to insufficient industrial capacity after the war (some were manufactured in Vienna until the late 1920s), the first batch of official awards was delayed until 1924. The early versions with 1921 inscriptions are prototypes or trial products.
- 1921 was the early period of Horthy's regency. Hungary faced territorial losses from the Treaty of Trianon (1920) and Charles IV's attempt to restore the throne. These 1921-version medals were intended to be awarded after the successful restoration, but after the restoration failed, the medals were sealed and not awarded until after 1935.
