United States Navy Seaman 2nd Class ships Cook Clifton Allen Swink (service #2623126) was born July 10th 1921 in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina.

Clifton enlisted as a seaman in the U.S. Navy on September 21st 1938. He served aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Wilson (DD-408) from her commission on July 5th 1939 through March 1st 1940. He agreed to a two year extension of service and on March 2nd 1940 was transferred to the transport U.S.S. Henderson (AP-1), FFT Asiatic Station for duty. On April 24th he was transferred to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Langley (CVL27) and stayed aboard until he was transferred again to the USS Heron AVP2 on August 7, 1941. Clifton served as a Ship's Cook 2nd Class on the Heron.

S2c Swink was transferred to the Kanawha-class replenishment oiler U.S.S. Pecos (AO-6) and on the 27th February 1942, the seaplane tender U.S.S. Langley, destroyers U.S.S. Edsall and U.S.S. Whipple were attacked by bombers. Langley was heavily damaged and had to be abandoned. Edsall picked up 177 survivors; Whipple, 308. On March 1st the destroyers transferred the survivors to the Pecos and Pecos, now carrying about 700 survivors from Langley, Stewart and Houston, headed for Australia.

At noon that day, planes from the Japanese aircraft carrier Sōryū located and attacked Pecos and struck again an hour later. For some time she sent out distress calls to any Allied ships in the area, as it was assumed the ship would probably be lost. Finally at midafternoon, a third strike sank the Pecos. According to pilot Shinsaku Yamakawa of the Imperial Japanese Navy, the final attack was conducted by dive bombers from the aircraft carrier Kaga.

S2c Swink was listed on a roster of US dead as

"unrecoverable" and "missing". After the sinking of the Pecos, his name appears on the tablets of the missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal, this Good Conduct Medal and the American/Asiatic theater medals.
