1863, MARTINSBURG, VIRGINIA / (WEST VIRGINIA), ALLEGIANCE OF OATH TO THE UNITED STATES, ISSUED BY THE UNION ARMY OFFICE OF THE PROVOST MARSHAL IN THE MUCH DISPUTED REGION OF MARTINSBURG, A 50/50 PRO/CON CONFEDERATE TOWN. THIS FORM WAS USED TO ENLIST THE LOCAL POPULATION TO SWEAR AN OATH OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE UNION MILITARY AND THE UNITED STATES DURING THE CIVIL WAR.
The major representation of Union soldiers/personnel occupying Martinsburg, W.V. were from Ohio & Pennsylvania.This oath form is unfilled/blank of name and was to be issued in what is now West Virginia, a tough locale for any early paper ephemera, especially a Military document during the conflict of the Civil War.
