During the First World War, American soldiers went to Europe sporting the M1911 campaign hat. Americans observed a lighter, more favorable hat being worn by the French, which was soon incorporated into US inventory. During the 1930\'s the hat was referred to as the \"field cap\", with a plain version for enlisted men, and a version with branch of service piping for officers. During World War II, the hat was modified again by assigning branch of service piping for enlisted men, and metallic braid for officers.
Wonderful example of the World War II enlisted garrison hat for the Summer Class B Uniform. The example features the Branch of Service piping for the Ordnance Corps. During World War II, this hat was worn by enlisted men who were not assigned to a specific branch of service. This is a private purchase example, featuring a leather sweatband, and a tailors size label indicating that this is a size 7 3/8. The inside of the hat has the name \"PRICE, R.K.\" in black ink. The leather sweatband features the laundry number \"P-0513\" that is lightly written in ink.
As a private purchase item, there is no spec label.
The hat remains in very good condition, showing signs of age, use and wear. The leather sweatband is still relatively pliable, but shows cracking and leather loss on areas. Generally nice! Please see the pictures for more detail.
