The gg400 is a compact, highly portable 400-watt DC generator used extensively by the German panzer units and Luftwaffe during World War II. Designed and built by Auto Union AG. Battery Conservation: Instead of running heavy vehicle engines (like tanks or staff cars) just to power radios during prolonged stationary periods, troops used the small GG400 to save heavy fuel consumption.Vehicle Integration: It was standard auxiliary equipment on specialized signal vehicles, mobile workshops, command halftracks (such as variants of the Sd.Kfz. 250 and Sd.Kfz. 251), and select command variants of the Tiger I tank, which featured a small armored exhaust chimney on the roof.Portability: Frequently issued to signals and paratrooper (Fallschirmjäger) units where rapid, reliable field communications were paramount
Engine Type: Single-cylinder, air-cooled, two-stroke engine (approx. 33cc to 40cc displacement).
Power Output: Maximum 400 W at 4,800 rpm (approx. 0.9 hp).
Electrical Output: Selectable via a rotary switch—12V/16V DC (used to power radio systems or charge 12V vehicle and field batteries).
Weight: Approximately 24 kg (53 lbs).
Starting: Manual pull/hand crank or electric start capability when hooked up to a live battery
Condition: Completely restored and repainted. This arrived broken the cast aluminum supports for the engine block cracked and broke off. These were reattached via a high strength industrial automotive 2 part epoxy. The last few photos show the extent of the damage which is now little to be noticed. Most parts were rusty and missing paint so this was disassembled, sandblasted, primed, and repainted panzergrau. Some spots of paint have since worn but adds a more authentic look. The functionality side of things was not addressed or tested during the restoration. The data plates are all present and were touched up to remove some damage/rust. The crank moves smoothly. The fuel line was replaced (not by me) and suffered a break in the middle when it was shipped to me. The spark plug connector wire is not original. Again, function has not been tested. This is very heavy and will require a large box to ship it safely.
