The Border Troops of the KGB of the USSR during the Cold War were a separate and well-developed force formation, subordinated directly to the Committee for State Security. Their main role was to protect the state borders of the USSR along the entire vast line - from the Baltics to the Far East, from the North to the Caucasus and Central Asia. They controlled checkpoints, patrolled mountain passes, sea areas and river borders, fought espionage, illegal border crossings and smuggling. The KGB Border Troops were an important part of the USSR defense system and had a military structure with their own units, equipment, aviation and special forces. In peacetime, they maintained high combat readiness, conducted reconnaissance on the border and provided continuous surveillance of adjacent territories.
During the Afghan War, the border troops gained special importance, as they controlled the Soviet-Afghan border, through which the Mujahideen tried to receive weapons and support from Pakistan. Parts of the KGB Special Forces were stationed in the border areas. Their task was to detect sabotage groups, prevent breakthroughs across the border, patrol the mountainous terrain, guard outposts and participate in combat operations against detachments trying to penetrate the territory of the USSR.
In Afghanistan itself, the KGB Special Forces units also operated as part of operational groups. They conducted reconnaissance, escorted columns, organized ambushes, intercepted caravans with weapons and strengthened the defense of outposts. The border guards had extensive experience in serving in difficult natural conditions, so they were often involved in operations in the mountains.
During this period, the KGB Special Forces became one of the most important security tools on the southern borders of the USSR. Their service combined border work, military operations, and counterintelligence tasks, making them a special and highly professional structure of the Soviet security system.
