Rare obsolete original insignia for the Afghan army paratroopers from the Soviet intervention era. The parachute cords are real metal bullion. Cloth wings. Measure approximately 2 1/4” across from edge to edge. This is 1st Class, Type 2. This was equivalent to Master Paratrooper. With the arrival of the Soviet instructors in 1979, the Afghan army commando force rapidly expanded to form the 444th and 666th brigades in Kabul. The 37th Brigade and then the 38th Brigade, based in Parwan, followed. The 26th Independent Airborne Battalion mutinied against the Soviets and were crushed. During the Afghan war, the Commandos made several operational jumps but were finally destroyed following the Soviet withdrawal in 1988.
