The Red Army Air Forces of the USSR played a key role in the fight against the enemy during World War II. At the beginning of the war, aviation suffered heavy losses due to the suddenness of the attack, poor training and imperfect organization, which led to the loss of a significant part of the equipment in the first months. However, active restoration and reorganization began in 1942, which allowed for the gradual restoration of control in the air.
The main tasks of aviation were to support ground forces, strike at enemy positions, destroy their equipment and manpower, and fight for air supremacy. Pilots accompanied their troops during offensives, covered them from enemy attacks and participated in large-scale air battles. Long-range aviation was also an important direction, which struck at enemy rear facilities - warehouses, railway junctions and industrial centers.
During the war, Soviet aviation was significantly strengthened, improved pilot training and interaction with other branches of the armed forces. Mass production of equipment was established, which made it possible to compensate for losses and create a numerical advantage. Aviation became more organized, large air formations appeared, capable of operating on a wide front.
By the end of the war, the Red Army Air Force had become a powerful force that provided support for the offensive, destroyed enemy defenses and helped achieve strategic victories. They made a significant contribution to the overall victory, becoming an integral part of the fighting at all stages of the war.
