This is an extraordinarily scarce badge from the Vietnam War era, issued by the Ho Chi Minh Revolutionary People's Youth Union, the official youth organization of the National Liberation Front (NLF), also known as the Viet Cong.

What makes this badge especially significant is the flag it features: the original NLF flag, with red over blue and a central yellow star—a flag distinct from that of North Vietnam.

Unlike the more commonly encountered badges that display the North Vietnamese flag, this piece bears the symbol of the southern insurgency, created to represent the Viet Cong's struggle within South Vietnam.

During the war, wearing or displaying this flag in the South was an act of extreme defiance. Discovery could lead to interrogation, imprisonment, or execution—as it was considered open support for the enemy by U.S. and South Vietnamese authorities. For that reason, original examples of this type are exceptionally rare, particularly ones that survived in good condition.

The design shows a clenched fist holding the NLF flag, rising from radiant lines suggesting a revolutionary dawn. The inscription surrounding the badge reads:

"Đoàn Thanh Niên Nhân Dân Cách Mạng Hồ Chí Minh"

which translates to “Ho Chi Minh Revolutionary People’s Youth Union.” This organization mobilized young people for revolutionary service and guerrilla support throughout the South, playing a key role in NLF operations.

Badges from this youth union were often produced later with the North Vietnamese flag, especially post-reunification, but this example—bearing the true Viet Cong insignia—represents a much earlier and risk-laden period of the conflict.

It is not only rare but politically loaded, representing the underground struggle for power, ideology, and identity in wartime Vietnam. A powerful and important artifact for any collection focused on the Vietnam War, revolutionary movements, or the history of resistance in Southeast Asia.
