Firefighter brotherhood is a glorious tradition of Russian firefighters.
Unfortunately, firefighters at that time lacked social protection. Low wages prevented them from paying for expensive treatment for serious injuries sustained while fighting fires. Under these circumstances, Russian firefighters demonstrated the fire service\'s characteristic desire to help their comrades in times of need. The concept of \"firefighter brotherhood,\" both past and present, reflects the best moral qualities of firefighters.
On June 27, 1897, at the initiative of Russian firefighters, the Blue Cross Mutual Aid Society for Firefighters was founded. Its purpose was to provide assistance to firefighters injured in the line of duty. The use of blue in the society\'s symbolism stemmed from the fact that the firefighters\' dress uniforms were trimmed with blue piping on the sleeves and collar.
The society\'s activities gradually gained wider recognition. Any fire department in Russia, regardless of its status, could join. To do so, one had to submit an application to the steering committee and make a small contribution to the general fund. Part of the funds came from private donations from concerned citizens wishing to thank the firefighters for their noble work.
If necessary, funds were allocated from this mutual aid fund to provide financial assistance to any firefighter in need of rehabilitation. The Blue Cross Society enabled all fire brigades in the Russian Empire to provide financial support to their personnel in the event of disability and, in the event of their death, to provide support to their family members.
