Theofficial name of the country was the "Federal Republic ofYugoslavia", or "FR Yugoslavia" for short. The name Yugoslavia. The Slavic word jug means 'south', while slavija ('Slavia") denotes a'land of the Slavs'. Thus, a translation of "Jugoslavija" would be'South-Slavia' or 'South Slav Land'. This is because the initial idea of'Yugoslavia,' was a state of Southern Slavs which could protect itself fromforeign empires. The native name of Yugoslavia remained the same in all SouthSlavic languages, spoken within the country.
