THE FRENCH ARMY BALLOON SQUADRON OF THE 3RD ENGINEER REGIMENT AT THE BALLOON HANGAR IN ARRAS, FRANCE IN 1887 PREPARE THE INFLATED CAPTURED BALLOON ALONG WITH A SMALL PARTIALLY INFLATED BACKUP BALLOON IN THE FOREGROUND. ALONG WITH THE RARE VIEW OF THE ARRAS HANGAR ITSELF ARE THE FRENCH ARMY TROOPS WITH AN OFFICER ON HORSEBACK, A GUARD HOUSE WITH ARMED GUARD, AND BALLOON SUPPORT WAGONS.
Arraswas a French military facility which conducted pioneering aeronautics research in the 19th century. It was established in the 1870s following the successful use of balloons by the French military during the Siege of Paris in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. After the Franco-Prussian war following the overhaul of French military,Charles Renard(b.1847- d.1905)was responsible for setting up a center for studies, experiments and instructions allowing the use of military balloons in the countryside. At the conclusion of this work, eight field balloon parks were created in 1879, including that of Arras.

CONDITION IS VERY FINE WITH SOME LIGHT ARCHIVAL QUALITY RESTORATION ON THE REVERSE ALONG WITH SOME VERY LIGHT HANDLING FROM ITS 137 YEARS.
