This patch shows a U.S. Army cavalry guidon, the red over white swallowtail troop flag, with a skull in a blue Stetson over crossed cavalry sabers.
Red over white swallowtail guidons were first authorized for dragoon companies in 1834. During the Civil War, General Order 4 of 1862 switched cavalry guidons to stars and stripes, and General Order 10 returned them to red and white in 1885, regimental number above and troop letter below. This one carries no number or letter, so it fits any troop or squadron.
The patch measures 4.5 by 2.5 inches, has a cut edge shaped to the flag, and has an iron-on backing.
Sew it on a jacket or reunion vest, frame it with your spurs, or give it to a cav scout or tanker you served with.
