Proletarsky Car Repair Plant NKPS:
The Proletarsky Carriage Repair Plant was created by order of the VORZ NKPS No. 252 dated June 27, 1931 on the basis of former carriage workshops founded in 1844. The plant NKPS No. 15 dated January 9, 1932 was officially renamed to Oktyabrsky Car Repair Plant (OVRZ) by the head of the People's Commissariat of Railways (NKPS), L.M. Kaganovich which it remained from 1935-1958. By Order of the Ministry of Railways No. G-23369 dated August 28, 1962, it was renamed OEVRZ.
The plant handled the repair of all-metal passenger cars, motor-unit sections, traction engines and auxiliary machines of MAF as well as the repair and formation of wheel-sets along with steel casting.
Reference book pictured: Soviet Badges, Volume 3: Labor Heroes and Shock-Workers, by Igor Sysolyatin Pg: 148 (3.256) 2022
Description of the badge:
The shape of the sign is a windswept banner with a large red Star in the foreground with a superimposed steam locomotive. The overall construction consists of solid silver with quality hot baked enamel. The inscription on the banner reads:
“Лучшему ударнику Пролетарского паровозоремонтного завода НКПС”. This translates to "Best Udarnik (Shock Worker) of the Proletarsky Locomotive Repair Plant NKPS".
The silver chain is held together by a bent silver wire which may be original to the Star suspension as pictured in an unidentified vintage Russian book on Soviet badges (pictured above). However, the loop seen in Sysolyatin’s book is not present.
The reverse inscription reads:
“M. P. Kaltsert
Nov. 7, 1932
No. 7”
Please note the presence of enamel scratches, and a couple small locations where it has chipped through. This badge is exceptionally rare, and a great addition to any Soviet collection!
Ultraviolet image included to show lack of modern repairs to the enamel.
