Scale of losses: The battle was one of the bloodiest in history; total casualties on both sides exceeded two million people. Title and legacy: The honorary title "Hero City" was first proclaimed in an order by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief on May 1, 1945. The city itself was renamed Volgograd in 1961.Design of the Commemorative Desk Medal:The upper section (red): symbolizes courage and the blood shed for the Fatherland.
