Soyuz 39 was the joint Soviet/Mongolian flight conducted under the Interkosmos program, which brought partner nations into crewed spaceflight alongside the USSR. Launched on 22 March 1981, the mission carried Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov and Mongolian cosmonaut Jügderdemidiin Gürragchaa to the Salyut 6 orbital station, where they performed materials science, Earth observation, and biomedical experiments designed to expand participation in long duration space research. Gürragchaa became the first Mongolian in space, marking a major milestone for the country and reinforcing Interkosmos as a diplomatic and scientific bridge between the USSR and its partners.
