KGB is of course theRussian acronym for Komitet Gosudarstvennoi Bezopasnosti (Committee for StateSecurity). This is a 100% GUARANTEED ORIGINAL, official Soviet-made KGB medal,not a replica, post-Soviet reissue, or souvenir!
The medal was producedby the Soviet Mint during the 1960s-80s. The medallion is made of silver-platedbrass and high-quality “hot-baked” enamel. It measures 37.0 mm in heightincluding the eyelet, 32.0 mm wide, and weighs 16.1 g not including the suspensionand connecting link.
This medal was awardedEXCLUSIVELY to career officers of the KGB; no officer in any other branch ofservice could get it. KGB medals differ from all other kinds of Soviet longservice medals by having a Roman numeral on the front. Note also that the backof the medal only says “For Irreproachable Service,” not specifying the branch(for obvious reasons).
The font of writing isalso peculiar to the KGB medals – but of course, only the initiated would knowthat back in Soviet times! Few badges were awarded exclusively to Soviet KGBofficers but no other medals (although they could get general issue orders andmedals such as the Order of Lenin etc.) This makes KGB long service medalstruly unique in this respect. The First Class of this medal, for 20 years ofuninterrupted service in KGB / NKVD, was the highest of the three KGB length ofservice awards.
The medal is inOUTSTANDING CONDITION. The enamel is perfect, original, completely free ofchips, flaking or repairs, and shows a nice luster; it has only somemicroscopic contact marks that are completely invisible to the naked eye. Allthe raised details are essentially perfect and very crisp; there is no visiblewear on the medallion aside from some tiny dings to the edge, almostunnoticeable without magnification. The original silver finish is bright withsome very mild, even patina that adds character, no blemishes or significanttarnish.
