SovietRKKA (Red Army) Marksman Badge for Excellent Shooting, 1938-1941 issue.
This is a GUARANTEEDORIGINAL Award from pre-war – early WW2 period – NOT a replica or reissue (withthe exception of replaced suspension device).
The badge is ofextremely nice quality. The pendant is made in silver-plated brass andhigh-quality “hot-baked” enamels. It measures 45.3 x 36.3 mm not including theattachment chains and suspension device; overall height is approx. 90 mm withsuspension device and chains. The reverse of the pendant shows the logo"Mondvor" of the Soviet Mint in raised characters.
The pendant includingthe bulls eye target, red star banner and scroll with inscription РККА (“RKKA”,Russian acronym for Workers and Peasants’ Red Army) is in excellent condition, which is very uncommon for this early award. The enamel is extremely wellpreserved everywhere showing only a few microscopic contact marks that could bebarely found even under 10x magnification and completely invisible to the nakedeye. The red enamel in particular is perfect and exhibits beautiful luster.Includes the original attachment eyelets and full-length chains. As it’s oftenthe case, the suspension device is a replacement and came from another Sovietbadge of the same period (the original suspension was rectangular in shape withtwo eyelets for the chain and screw post with “Mondvor”-marked screw plate).
Nevertheless, even withthe replacement suspension device the badge looks great! It is very likely thatthis is exactly as it was worn by the original recipient. The suspension has afully functional screw post with an early post-war screw plate mint-marked“Monetnyi Dvor”.
Unlike the contemporaryOSOAVIAKhIM badges which could be awarded to civilians as well as servicemen, this was strictly a military award for the Red Army personnel; starting from1940 the badge was also issued to Soviet Navy sailors). The production of thebadge stopped immediately after the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June1941, and therefore relatively few original examples survived to these days.
