The Medal "Partisan of the Patriotic War" was established by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 2, 1943 . The author of the medal drawing is artist N. I. Moskalev . The drawing is taken from the unrealized project of the medal “25 years of the Soviet Army”.The Partisan of the Patriotic War was awarded the medal to the partisans , the commanding part of the partisan detachments and the organizers of the partisan movement for "special merits in organizing the partisan movement, for courage, heroism and outstanding successes in the partisan struggle for the Soviet Motherland behind the rear of the Nazi invaders."
Medal No. 1 in June 1943 was awarded to the Soviet partisan Efim Ilyich Osipenko [1] , a miner, the commander of a demolition group, who in the fall of 1941 became the commander of the mobile group of the partisan detachment "Forward", operating in the Sukhinichi region of the Kaluga region. In the area of Myshbor station, after the failure of a makeshift mine fuse, he detonated a charge by striking the detonator with a pole from the railway sign. As a result, the enemy echelon (a steam locomotive and three platforms with tanks) was derailed, the partisan was seriously wounded and lost his sight [2] .
By the beginning of 1968, more than 127 thousand men and women (organizers and leaders of the partisan movement, partisan detachment commanders and particularly distinguished partisans) were awarded the 1st and 2nd degree Partisan of the Patriotic War medal [3] .
As of January 1, 1995 the medal "Partisan of the Patriotic War" 1st degree awarded by 56,883 people, the 2nd degree - 70 992 people.
