Order of the Polar Star
The order was established by the Swedish king Fredrik I in 1748.
Motto: "Nescit occasum" - Knows no sunset.
Its statute reads: “We assign it to those who have distinguished themselves by civic virtues, knowledge and institutions useful to society, and have received special attention. We call it by this name, so that the gentlemen, decorated with this order, remember that this star never sets and their duty is not to detract from the glory of the Swedes and not to destroy the brilliance already acquired by the long consequence of centuries ... "
Since 1975, the order has been awarded exclusively to foreign citizens for an important contribution to the development of relations with Sweden. In Sweden itself, the order is awarded only to members of the Swedish royal house.
