The orange embroidery against the deep black background gives the shield shaped patch a particularly striking appearance and reflects the visual language used on Swiss specialist and function insignia of the period. Unlike the diamond shaped collar patches, this was part of the Swiss Army's separate system of function and distinction insignia.
