Two Soldier Letters J.S.Taylor NY Soldier, Fort Sumner MD August 8 65 Pickets:
$110.00

Civil War letter from a New York soldier J. S. Taylor probably from De Peyster New York, excellent general content letter, nearly 4 pages on United States Sanitary Commission imprint letterhead, easy to read handwriting from a reasonably well educated soldier.Talks of being assigned as a room orderly, an easy job sweeping up daily and making sure everything is tidy and neat getting ready for inspection. Actually two letters in one, 3 pages to his parents and one page to Fred, probably his brother. Concened about a money safe that was sent home afraid it would be robbed but glad (parents) got it, talks of getting pay and pick pockets.
Mentions the De Peyster boys, the 6(th)Heavy (artillery) are down repairing the fort, may go to Fort Richmond, sending some penny royal that doctor ordered Bedie to take, in writing to Fred asks how the girls pony up in the village town, thinks he will be able to come home and stay a spell.
