The Medal "For the Defense of the Soviet Arctic" was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of December 5, 1944 "On the establishment of the medal "For the Defense of the Soviet Arctic" and on the awarding of this medal to participants in the defense of the Soviet Arctic." On the obverse of the medal is a bust of a soldier in a sheepskin coat and a fur hat with earflaps with a PPSh submachine gun. To the left, behind the figure of the soldier, you can see the outlines of a combat vessel. In the upper part of the medal, on both sides of the soldier, are silhouettes of airplanes. In the lower part of the medal are images of tanks. Around the circumference of the medal is an inscription in a frame "FOR THE DEFENSE OF THE SOVIET ARCTIC." At the bottom of the frame is a ribbon with a five-pointed star on it. In the center of the star is a hammer and sickle.
