United States: Three AmericanDefense Service Medals with bars: Foreign Service, Fleet and Base.Created on 6 November 1942 by President Roosevelt, the NDSMwas awarded to soldiers, sailors and marines that served during the proclaimed nationalemergency from 8 September 1939 to 7 December 1941. Bars were included forservice overseas: Foreign Service for Army personnel; Fleet for sailors andmarines that served on the high seas; and Base for sailors and marinesstationed on shore at overseas locations (see Strandberg, J. and Bender, R., The Call of Duty (1994) pp. 203-204).All medals are in near extremely fine condition; on original ribbons and slot brooches, withoriginal bars. The NDSM with the Fleet bar has a bronze battle star on theribbon; there appears to be no authority for such a star to be worn on the NDSMribbon; thus, sold as worn.
